DR CARE
2019
Oil on canvas
26 x 66 cm

It’s tough to say what I've swallowed or put up my nose but you only get one chance to make a first impression, and the sheer geography of Francesca Blomfield’s DR CARE makes direction of approach a crucial factor. Split three ways horizontally like a flag or banner, it takes a beat for my eyes to adapt to the terrain and battle the desire to see it with my fingers. Once you’ve adjusted, stepped back and maybe taken a seat, the title appears to you from the midst while the meanders at top and bottom pulse with potential revelations (is there a swastika lurking?). Delving deeper I realise my mistake - I haven’t downed or snorted anything but actually licked a toad: DR CARE must be my jungle physician and here to address the poisons of my conditioned existence. Side effects may include feeling euphoric, energised, giggly, empathetic, but can also make you see/hear things that aren’t there, confused, anxious, frightened. What you get is relative to your personal doors of perception; is your lurking swastika facing left or right, towards divinity or the abyss.
